Pehmee tuo Ateneumiin audiovisuaalisen teoksen The Norm – Episode 1, jossa kollektiivi käsittelee kehollisuutta ja normiin mahtumiseen liittyviä toimintoja sekä tunteita. The Norm on nähty osana Pehmee kollektiivin SO BAD – beautiful active destruction -performanssia Flow Festivaaleilla elokuussa 2019.

Videoteoksessa kollektiivi toisintaa 90-luvun laihdutusvillitystä, kelmukäärintää pyykkituvassa, seuranaan myös kuivaharjaus. Kelmutusta harrastettiin muun muassa saunassa, vaatteiden alla tai lenkillä ja se on edelleen suosittu laihdutusmenetelmä. Kelmun alla iho hikoilee ja poistaa nesteitä, luoden illuusion pysyvästä painonmuutoksesta. Harvemmin kuitenkaan kerrotaan ettei muutos ole pysyvää ja kelmun käyttämisen aikana myrkkyjä kertyy ihon alle, mikä voi johtaa lievimmillään allergiseen reaktioon, pahimmillaan kuolemaan. Yksilön kelmuttamisella ei kuitenkaan ratkaista yhteiskunnallista onglemaa, eli fatphobiaa. Eikä myöskään selluliitin kuivaharjaamisella.

Videoteoksen ympärille rakentuu installaatio jonka perimmäinen tarkoitus on ottaa anteeksipyytelemättömästi tilaa valkoisissa instituutioissa, mikä ei yleensä ole yhteiskunnassa sallittua marginalisoiduille kehoille. Kollektiivi haluaa herätellä työllään kysymyksen siitä millaisia töitä, taiteilijoita tai kehoja nähdään taiteen kontekstissa?

In Pehmee’s hands, Ateneum becomes the host of their audiovisual work The Norm – Episode 1, where the collective deals with bodiliness and the actions and emotions connected to fitting the norm. The Norm has previously been seen during Pehmee collective’s SO BAD – beautiful active destruction performance at Flow Festival in August, 2019.

In their video work, the collective reproduces the weight loss fad of the 90s: cling film wrapping in the laundry room, along with dry brushing. Wrapping was done in the sauna, under one’s clothes or during one’s jog, and it is still a popular means of weight loss. The skin sweats under the wrap and removes fluids, thus creating an illusion of permanent changes in weight. However, no one ever tells us that the change isn’t permanent and that toxins gather under the skin while wrapping, which can lead to an allergic reaction at best and death at worst. Wrapping doesn’t solve the societal problem, that is, fatphobia. And neither does dry brushing cellulite.

An installation is built around this video work, and its ultimate purpose is to unapologetically take space in white institutions, something that is usually not allowed for marginalised bodies in our society. With their work, the collective wishes to question what kind of works, artists or bodies are seen within the context of art.
